Job Summary:
The K9 Officer is responsible for providing specialized support to law enforcement agencies in the area of criminal justice. This role involves working closely with a trained K9 partner to perform various law enforcement duties, including but not limited to apprehending suspects, conducting searches, and ensuring public safety. The K9 Officer must possess a strong understanding of criminal justice procedures and demonstrate exceptional skills in handling and training police dogs.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to execute law enforcement operations in accordance with established policies and procedures.
2. Utilize K9 partner to detect and apprehend suspects involved in criminal activities, ensuring the safety of both the officer and the public.
3. Conduct thorough searches of buildings, vehicles, and open areas to locate narcotics, explosives, firearms, and other contraband materials.
4. Provide assistance in locating missing persons, tracking suspects, and conducting search and rescue operations using the K9 partner's capabilities.
5. Conduct routine training sessions with the K9 partner to maintain and enhance their skills in obedience, tracking, aggression control, and scent detection.
6. Handle and maintain K9 partner's equipment, including but not limited to leashes, harnesses, muzzles, and vehicles, ensuring they are in optimal condition for use.
7. Document and maintain accurate records of K9 partner deployment, training activities, and operational incidents.
8. Participate in ongoing professional development and trainings to stay updated on the latest techniques and best practices related to K9 operations.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
2. Certification as a K9 Officer or equivalent specialized training in K9 operations.
3. Proven experience in law enforcement or security roles, with a minimum of 2 years preferred.
4. Possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
5. Excellent physical condition, capable of handling and controlling a large and powerful police dog.
6. Strong knowledge of criminal justice procedures, laws, and regulations.
7. Proficient understanding of K9 behavior, training techniques, and scent detection principles.
8. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with law enforcement agencies and interact with the public.
9. Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as K9 Officer duties require.
10. Demonstrated ability to remain calm and composed in high-stress situations.
